Chair of Power Electronics


Giusi Quartarone graduated in Computer Science at University of Pavia in 2010 and in November 2013 she finished the Ph.D in Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale e dell’Informazione. During the Ph.D she studied energy conversion systems, with focus on compressed air systems. She spent several months at the research center of Atlas Copco (Antwerp, Belgium), one of the biggest air compressors’ manufacturers. At the end of her Ph.D she won the scholarship “Progetto Professionalità” funded by Fondazione Banca el Monte di Lombardia (Italian bank): the scolarship gave her the the possibility to work three months at the University of Kiel, Department of power Electronics with professor Marco Liserre on Solid State Transformer. She also deepened the knowledge on such kind of transformer in Siemens, in the Energy Sector - Power Transmission Division of Nuremberg, where she worked as intern for three months.


  • Our research is focused on the design of high efficient and reliable PWM-based power converter architectures (single-cell, multi-cell, multilevel), their modelling and control to exploit commercial as well as new power semiconductor devices with minimum over design.
    We develop controllers for electric drives and we are particularly skilled in the integration of renewable energy systems into the electric grid.
