In this course the basic knowledge of structures and behaviour as well as the knowledge and experience concerning dimensioning of power semiconductors will be presented as a necessary part of understanding how these devices are used in power electronics circuits. 

Topics will be:
 
  • basic usage of power semiconductors in converters
  • IGBT (physical basics, characteristic values in usage, control, protection, structure of power-electronics-parts)
  • MOSFET (physical basics, characteristic values in usage, control, protection, structure of power-electronics-parts)
  • series and parallel connections
  • thermic behaviour, cooling
  • structure and construction of power semiconductors
  • reliability, operating life
  • microprocessor controlling used in power electronics
  • relevance of devices in commerce, future development

Research

  • Our research is focused on the design of high efficient and reliable PWM-based power converter architectures (single-cell, multi-cell, multilevel), their modelling and control to exploit commercial as well as new power semiconductor devices with minimum over design.
    We develop controllers for electric drives and we are particularly skilled in the integration of renewable energy systems into the electric grid.
